What should you wear to your first ski lesson? Discover what to bring, what equipment you can rent, and how to prepare for ski lessons in Budapest.
What to Wear and Bring to Your First Ski Lesson – A Complete Guide
Getting ready for your first ski or snowboard lesson but not sure what to wear or what equipment to bring? Good news: you don't need to buy expensive ski gear before getting started!
At Pasarét Ski School and Normafa Ski School in Budapest, you can rent all the essential ski and snowboard equipment on-site. As for clothing, you probably already have everything you need at home.
In this guide, we'll explain what to wear for your first ski lesson, what equipment you can rent, and how to prepare for skiing on our artificial ski slopes.
What Ski Equipment Can You Rent at Our Ski Schools?
If you're just starting to learn skiing or snowboarding, there's no need to invest in expensive equipment right away.
At both of our ski schools, you can rent the essential gear you need for your lesson.
The following equipment is available for rent:
Skis: We provide skis suitable for your height and skiing ability.
Snowboards: Want to try snowboarding instead? You can rent a snowboard too.
Ski boots and snowboard boots: Properly fitted boots are essential for comfortable and safe learning.
Helmets: Wearing a helmet is mandatory for all participants, and helmets are available to rent on-site.
This means you can start learning to ski or snowboard even if you don't own any equipment.
What Should You Bring to Your Ski Lesson?
Although you can rent most of the equipment at our ski schools, there are a few things you should bring with you.
1. Gloves – Mandatory All Year Round!
Wearing gloves is mandatory at both of our ski schools, even during summer when temperatures can reach 20–30°C (68–86°F).
Gloves help protect your hands when falling on the artificial ski surface and when using the ski lifts.
In cold weather: We recommend regular, warm ski gloves.
In warm weather: Lightweight work gloves or gardening gloves are perfectly suitable.
Forgot your gloves? No problem! Gardening gloves are also available for purchase on-site, making them a practical option for summer ski lessons.
2. Long Socks or Ski Socks
We strongly recommend wearing long socks when using ski boots.
Proper ski socks are ideal, but regular sports socks that cover your lower legs can also work well for beginners.
The most important thing is that your socks extend above the top of your ski boots. This helps prevent the boots from rubbing directly against your skin.
Avoid wearing overly thick socks or multiple pairs, as these can make your ski boots uncomfortable.
3. Comfortable, Weather-Appropriate Clothing
Many people assume that skiing always requires a ski jacket and insulated ski pants. However, that's not the case!
At Pasarét and Normafa Ski Schools, we teach skiing and snowboarding on artificial ski slopes throughout the year, so your clothing should primarily match the weather conditions.
In warm weather, during spring and summer:
A comfortable sports T-shirt
Shorts or lightweight trousers
Thin gloves
Long socks
In cooler weather, during autumn and winter:
Comfortable sports trousers
A sweatshirt or sports top
A weather-appropriate jacket
Warm gloves
Long socks
Make sure your clothing allows you to move freely. Skiing involves bending your knees, squatting, balancing, and plenty of movement.
Why Should You Wear Clothes You Don't Mind Getting Dirty?
This is one of our most important tips, especially if you're visiting an artificial ski slope for the first time!
Our ski schools use special artificial ski surfaces that are treated with a silicone-based lubricant to help skis and snowboards glide smoothly.
As a result, your clothes may come into contact with the lubricant during your lesson, particularly if you fall or sit down on the slope.
The silicone lubricant can usually be removed through normal washing, but we still recommend avoiding your newest or most expensive clothes.
An older pair of sports trousers, a comfortable sweatshirt, or simple sportswear is an excellent choice.
Tip for parents: Dress your children in clothes that can handle a little dirt! Falling down and getting back up are completely normal parts of learning to ski.
Is Wearing a Helmet Mandatory During Ski Lessons?
Yes! Helmets are mandatory for everyone participating in our ski and snowboard lessons, regardless of age or skill level.
This applies to both children and adults.
If you already have your own properly fitting ski helmet, you're welcome to bring it. Otherwise, you can rent one at our ski schools.
A well-fitting helmet is an essential part of safe skiing and snowboarding.
Do You Need to Buy Your Own Skis or Ski Boots Before Your First Lesson?
Absolutely not!
In fact, we recommend renting equipment when you're just starting out and considering buying your own gear only once you begin skiing regularly.
This is especially true for children, who quickly outgrow their ski boots and skis.
Renting equipment allows you and your family to discover skiing without making a significant financial investment upfront.
